Point-of-Use Water Heaters
The smallest of these water heaters typically fits under a sink to provide instant very hot water for making drinks such as tea quickly. Larger models can be used to provide hot water to a bathroom far from the primary source of hot water for a house. While their use has been limited in the USA, in some countries one small point-of-use water heater is installed in each bathroom, the kitchen, and the laundry room rather than having a single large water heater serve the whole house
Fuel: Usually electric in the USA, though some manufacturers do make gas models
Capacity: Varies from a half gallon up to 6 gallons
Efficiency: Very efficient at producing smaller amounts of hot water, but not at all efficient for large volumes of hot water
Installation Cost: Far lower than a traditional, high-efficiency, tankless, or hybrid water heater; but the lower cost is offset by the limited amount of hot water that can be produced by any one unit.
Operating Cost: Can save 33 – 50% of the cost of heating small amounts of water by more traditional means.
Safety: Point of Use water heaters produce very hot water, very quickly; therefore, the risk of scalding is much higher with these units and they should be used with care.
Life Span/Warranty: Point-of-Use water heaters typically carry a 6-year warranty and can be expected to last at least that long.
Environmental Benefits: Because they are installed right at the point of use, no water or energy is wasted on getting hot water from a distant tank to the point where it is needed. Also, because the tank is small, a smaller amount of energy is used to heat and store the water and not as much raw material or energy is required during production of the Point-of-Use water heater.
