Buy American!

March 9th, 2011

I took a break from the plumbing biz the other evening to watch an ABC News report on “Made In America.”  They say that if we all spend 1% more a year on American made products, we will generate 200,000 new jobs.  That got me thinking about where we spend our money; so, I got the guys to do a little research on the sources of our plumbing materials.

It turns out that 60% of what we spend on plumbing supplies is spent on American made products.  That’s not bad considering foreign made products are so prevalent in the plumbing business and they are usually cheaper than those made in America.  For example, we buy American copper piping even though copper from China costs a few pennies less per foot than American copper.

Overall, we’ve found that cheaper isn’t always better and that spending a little more on high-quality materials significantly reduces the number of times we go back to a home because a part failed. In fact our recall rate is under 2% every year.   This saves us money over time and allows us to price our services competitively with companies that use cheaper materials.

We’re not going to sit back and celebrate though. I’ve challenged our team to increase our spending on American Made products by 10% by the end of the year.  It won’t be easy to find more American made plumbing products.  Most toilets are made in Mexico or China; and all of the major brands of tankless water heaters are made overseas.  Still, it will be worth the effort if we can help put some Americans back to work without increasing our prices to our customers.

We hope you will join us and ABC News in this effort to Buy American and put Americans back to work!

Spring Plumbing Advice

March 2nd, 2011

So, the Bloggers’ Special Coupon was easy to do and worked out well. Now, here is a little Spring plumbing advice for everyone.

During the spring, temperatures fluctuate a lot. The main water line to your home expands and contracts with the changing temperature.  When this happens weak spots on your line can start to leak.  This can cause a significant increase in your monthly water bill.  (It doesn’t help with Georgia’s growing water shortage problem either.)

Watch your water bill carefully.  If you see a sudden spike in your water bill, check a few basic things:  Did you turn your sprinkler system back on, top up your swimming pool, or do something else that caused you to use more water than usual.  If the answer is “no” then call us to help you diagnose the problem and make any necessary repairs.

Hello world!

February 21st, 2010

“Hello World” That’s the subject line of a huge amount of e-mail I’ve received recently from people around the world.  The e-mails all praise my great “blog postings”.  The trouble is, I didn’t have a blog and had never even read someone else’s blog, so I didn’t understand why I was receiving all this e-mail.

My tech-savvy son explained these e-mails are just automated spam from people who either want to create “back-links” to their websites or have some more malicious intent.  Nice!

Anyway, this got me interested in understanding more about blogs. Then, I decided that if I’m going to be the recipient of so much blog-related spam, I might as well use the technology for some good.

So, here it is:  My first blog.  Future blogs will contain plumbing advice, discount coupons, video clips, and other useful information for our customers; but, for now, I just want to say “Hello World!”
